Hierarchical Celebration on the Occasion of Palm Sunday
at Saint Dimitrie the New Parish in Montreal
On Palm Sunday (the Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem), the faithful of Saint Dimitrie the New Parish in Montreal had the joy of welcoming and praying together with His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian. Concelebrating with the hierarch was the parish priest, Father Ion Ceaușu.
In his homily delivered at the end of the Divine Liturgy, Bishop Ioan Casian emphasized the spiritual meaning of this day, noting that it is not merely a historical commemoration, but a present, living encounter with Christ: “Today, the grace of the Holy Spirit has gathered us all together,” said the bishop, highlighting that the Church makes the event of the Lord’s Entry into Jerusalem present through the work of the Holy Spirit.
Drawing from the Gospel text, the bishop recalled the enthusiasm of the crowds who welcomed the Savior with the messianic cry: “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord,” explaining that this confession does not belong only to the past but becomes the voice of the Church today:
“The voices of the crowds in Jerusalem two thousand years ago and our voice today become a single voice.”
At the same time, the hierarch drew attention to the instability of the human heart, reminding the faithful that the same crowd who acclaimed Christ would, only a few days later, call for His crucifixion. This change, he underlined, is a call to discernment and faithfulness.
A central moment of the homily was the reflection on the raising of Lazarus as a testimony to Christ’s divinity: “Who could restore life except the One who has eternal life?” Through this miracle, the Savior reveals Himself as the Source of life and the Lord over death.
The bishop also highlighted the significance of Mary’s gesture of anointing the Lord’s feet with myrrh:
“This will be done in remembrance of His burial. She does it prophetically, anticipating what was to come,” showing that her love becomes a preparation for Christ’s burial.
Referring to the liturgical texts of the feast, the bishop emphasized that they proclaim the identity of the One who enters Jerusalem: “The Son and Word of the Father, without beginning and eternally with Him,” underscoring that He is not merely a man or a prophet, but the very Son of God, who came “for us and for our salvation.”
In conclusion, the hierarch noted that participation in this feast implies embracing a spiritual path:
“We do not take the place of Christ the Savior… but we can participate in what He has done,” calling the faithful to unite, through faith and life, with Christ’s saving work.
After the Divine Liturgy, the joy of the feast continued with a charity concert offered by Radu Covaciu (flute), Marcel Roșcovan (violin), and the church choir “Vox Anima,” conducted by Mrs. Raluca Covaciu. The artistic moment brought added emotion and communion, gathering the faithful in an atmosphere of solidarity and generosity.
The day concluded with a traditional agape meal organized by the priest’s wife, Mrs. Mihaela Ceaușu, together with the women of the parish. This gathering became a natural continuation of the liturgical communion, strengthening the bonds among community members and extending the joy of meeting in Christ, while also expressing Christian hospitality and love that beautifully completed the celebration.
