The First Edition of the Summer Camp at the Annunciation Chapel,

Howser, British Columbia

In the heart of the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia, at the foot of evergreen forests and near the clear waters of Howser Lake, the first edition of the summer camp for parents and children was held this summer at the “Annunciation” Chapel. This camp, initiated out of the love and pastoral care of the Spiritual Fathers from the “Annunciation” Cell of Mount Athos and blessed by His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian, was a true oasis of spiritual light for Orthodox families living in this part of the world.

Divided into two sessions, from August 21–24 and August 28–31, the camp brought together families of various nationalities, united by the same living faith and desire for communion. Among the participants were not only cradle Orthodox Christians but also those who had recently discovered the joy of baptism or were on their journey toward receiving this holy sacrament.

The spiritual atmosphere of the camp was ensured by the presence of Father Ciprian Roman, who, through his gentle and fervent ministry, brought daily the light of the Divine Liturgy — the bloodless sacrifice, a source of peace and spiritual strengthening for all. Around the wooden altar of the chapel, the faithful’s chants echoed through the mountains, which seemed to respond in turn, adding a heavenly dimension to the communal prayer. A little five-year-old child, held in the arms of one of the adults in the Church, spoke face-to-face with Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker.

The daily activities were filled with joy and communion with both nature and God. Children and parents alike experienced unforgettable moments on the calm waters of the lake, kayaking, boating, or sailing on a catamaran, admiring the stunning scenery and truly feeling the presence of the Creator in the beauty of His creation. Fishing trips, sleeping in tents or RVs, brought a joyful simplicity — a return to the essentials, where happiness springs from the small and pure things.

As the days passed, the bonds between the participants grew stronger, and their hearts were filled with gratitude and peace. Words are too poor to fully describe the beauty of those days, the impact that fraternal communion had on the souls of those present, and the majesty of the Kingdom of Heaven that seemed to descend upon the small chapel among the mountains and into the hearts of the faithful. Glory to You, O Lord, glory to You!
