A double confession of the need for God, freedom and truth
November 11th
On Wednesday, November 11, His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian celebrated the Divine Liturgy at St. George’s Episcopal Cathedral in Saint-Hubert. During the service, Romanian and Canadian Veterans who fell on the battlefields were mentioned.
At the end of the service the hierarch said:
“Today are two events that I would like to remember. It is the day when we honor, among others, St. Menas and St. Theodore the Studite. The first St. Menas - goes until the supreme sacrifice witnessing the faith and the hope in the saving work of the Resurrection of the incarnate Son of God.
St. Theodore the Studite is a confessor through ascetic life, hymnography and theology. He remains one of the great defenders of icons and a fighter and writer against iconoclasm.
The saints speak of a Christian life embodied in the fabric of Roman or Byzantine society. The examples of the saints tell us about the fact that the Church is present in the world being prophetic and preparing the Kingdom of Heaven.
Today we also commemorate the historic event of the Armistice of 1918 that ended the First World War. Today is called Veterans Day. Those who have fallen on the battlefields are also a testament to the need to maintain a just and right world for all the peoples of the world. It is a reminder of those who, for the ideal of defending the freedom of the invaders, gave their lives I order that the freedom remain the living environment of all.
St. Paul says, ‘Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom’ (2 Corinthians 3:17). Freedom is the sign of God’s presence. And freedom is a sign of truth and of God: ‘If you abide in My Word, then you are truly My disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free’ (John 8: 31-32). God, freedom and truth are inseparable realities. There can be no freedom and truth without God. He is the full freedom and truth that make man in His image and likeness.
The sacrifice of martyrs, ascetics and those who have fallen on the battlefield for the ideal of freedom speak of God and of the values we need as a society to live harmoniously and spiritually healthy.”
In conclusion, the hierarch blessed those present.
