His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian Participated in the Closing of the 86th Congress of the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese in the United States
On Sunday, July 12, 2026, at the invitation of His Eminence Nicolae, Metropolitan of the Romanian Orthodox Metropolia of the Americas, His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian of the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Canada participated in the Divine Liturgy and the festivities marking the conclusion of the 86th Congress of the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese in the United States. The event was hosted by Holy Trinity and the Holy Transylvanian Martyrs Parish in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The celebration brought together numerous faithful from the Romanian-American community, along with a large assembly of priests and deacons, in an atmosphere of profound spiritual joy. The service of blessing the church's newly completed iconography was followed by the celebration of the Divine Liturgy, concelebrated by the two hierarchs together with the clergy in attendance.
Following the reading of the Holy Gospel, His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian delivered a homily on the Gospel passage recounting the healing of the paralytic in Capernaum, emphasizing Christ's central role as the Divine Healer and the indispensable role of faith within the Church:
"In today's Gospel we can distinguish two important realities. First, we see the essential role of Christ in the healing of the sick man and, through him, of each one of us and of all humanity, whose restoration begins with the forgiveness of sins. Second, we see the importance of the faith of the people—that is, of the community of believers, the Church—which brings the sick person to Christ to receive healing.
Christ is the One who forgives and heals. He is the One who accomplishes everything in the Church through the grace of the Holy Spirit. Clergy and laity alike are servants through whom He works. The faith of the Church and of her faithful is essential, for they become both bearers of the message of healing and the living members through whom those who suffer are brought into the presence of Christ."
Reflecting on the blessing of the church's iconography, the hierarch continued:
"Today your community is experiencing a truly remarkable moment as the iconography adorning your church is being blessed. Sacred iconography is a foretaste of the life of holiness, a reminder of the lost Paradise, where Adam and Eve contemplated God's creation and God Himself, speaking with Him in perfect communion. It was the natural state for which humanity was created—a life of holiness—but one that was lost through the fall into sin.
A church adorned in this way, depicting the Holy Trinity, Christ, the Mother of God, the holy angels, and the saints, offers us an anticipation of what we shall fully experience in the Kingdom of God. The life of holiness begins here, within the Church. The Church becomes a place where eternal life is already tasted and foreshadowed, although its fullness will be revealed at the end of this age, when Christ returns in glory to judge the living and the dead.
Thus, the Church becomes the natural environment in which human life is restored according to God's design. A person's life is rebuilt within the Church, beginning with Holy Baptism, through which sins are forgiven; continuing with Holy Chrismation, through which the grace of the Holy Spirit is received; and culminating in the Holy Eucharist, through which believers partake of the Body and Blood of Christ and grow spiritually."
In closing, the Romanian hierarch encouraged those present to embrace the Church's spiritual mission so that Christians might become a transformative presence in society, contributing to the reduction of injustice, violence, poverty, and war, while bearing witness to Christ's peace and love.
During the Divine Liturgy, His Eminence Metropolitan Nicolae ordained Mr. Ioan Vaida, a member of the parish, to the rank of Diaconate.
At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, His Eminence Metropolitan Nicolae spoke about the importance of the Church, the diocesan Congress, and the participation of delegates from the newly established Spanish-speaking parishes in South America.
In recognition of dedicated service and significant contributions to the life of the Church, the hierarch presented several ecclesiastical distinctions.
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of his episcopal consecration, His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian was presented with a commemorative engolpion and the 2026 Icon of the Year as a sign of appreciation for his two decades of devoted episcopal ministry to Christ's Church in the United States and Canada.
His Eminence Metropolitan Nicolae also awarded the American Metropolitan Cross to Fr. Timotei Avram, parish priest, and to Deacon Petru Bogdan Manea, while the Metropolitan Cross for the laity was presented to the church's iconographers. In addition, commemorative albums and publications representing the Metropolia were offered to professors and representatives from the Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Alba Iulia and other guests from Romania.
His Eminence Metropolitan Nicolae concluded by expressing his gratitude to the clergy and delegates for their active participation in the Congress, emphasizing the importance of preserving unity, communion, and the missionary spirit within the Romanian Orthodoxy throughout the Americas.
The festivities concluded with a festive anniversary banquet, during which attendees enjoyed a cultural program featuring, among other performances, Romanian patriotic songs.
The blessing of the church's iconography crowns many years of dedicated labor and sacrifice by the clergy, the Parish Council, and all the benefactors who contributed to the beautification of the holy sanctuary. The church's iconography now stands as a lasting expression of the Romanian Orthodox faith and identity, offering the faithful a sacred space for prayer that lifts the soul and bears witness to the beauty of the Kingdom of God.
