The Sixth Congress of the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Canada:
A Gathering Focused on Pastoral Responsibility and Spiritual Renewal
From July 3–5, 2026, the sixth Congress of the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Canada was held at St. George and Sts. Epictetus and Astion Cathedral in Saint-Hubert. This significant event brought together hierarchs, clergy, faithful, and representatives of Romanian Orthodox communities across Canada for a time of profound reflection on the mission of the Diocese and its future pastoral priorities.
The occasion also marked the 20th anniversary of the episcopal consecration of His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian.
Participants were honored by the presence of three distinguished guests: His Eminence Metropolitan Laurențiu of Transylvania (who addressed the Congress virtually), His Grace Bishop Siluan of the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Hungary, and the Very Reverend Professor Vasile Mihoc, Ph.D., Emeritus Cultural Advisor to the Archdiocese of Sibiu.
A Central Theme of Reflection: "If Anyone Is in Christ, He Is a New Creation"
The central theme of the Congress was taken from 2 Corinthians 5:17: "The old has passed away; behold, all things have become new." This biblical verse served as the motto for the Congress, inviting participants to embrace spiritual renewal while renewing their commitment to the Church's pastoral and missionary vocation.
In a world increasingly marked by secularization, individualism, and social fragmentation, the theme reaffirmed the Church's calling to be a source of spiritual renewal, hope, and pastoral care for the faithful.
Careful Organization and Highlights of the Congress
The Congress was preceded on Thursday by the meeting of the Diocesan Council.
On Friday, following the opening prayer, His Grace Bishop Siluan delivered the pastoral conference. This was followed by a question-and-answer session during which Bishop Siluan and Rev. Prof. Dr. Vasile Mihoc addressed questions from participants concerning Christian family life and the pastoral challenges facing believers in contemporary society.
On Saturday, after the Service of Thanksgiving (TeDeum), participants attended the pastoral address of His Eminence Metropolitan Laurențiu of Transylvania, followed by the keynote lecture presented by Rev. Prof. Dr. Vasile Mihoc. The official proceedings of the Congress then commenced.
Among the most significant moments were the welcoming address of His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian, who emphasized every Christian's responsibility to become a "new creation" in Christ, and the message of His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel of Romania, highlighting the indispensable role of both the Church and the Christian family in today's society.
Reports covering the liturgical, catechetical, educational, administrative, financial, social-philanthropic, and cultural activities of the Diocese were presented and discussed. The Congress also elected and appointed members of the new Diocesan Council, the Diocesan Ecclesiastical Consistory, and the Metropolitan Consistory.
Special attention was given to the work of the St. Maximus the Confessor Centre for Cultural-Theological Formation and Catechesis. The representatives of the Centre were encouraged for further development of its educational programs, improved organizational structures, and the exploration of Canadian accreditation for its theological courses.
Renewing Liturgical Life and Catechetical Ministry
One of the principal themes throughout the Congress was the renewal of sacramental and liturgical life. Speakers reaffirmed that the Church's liturgical life must remain vibrant, participatory, and responsive to the pastoral needs of Orthodox faithful living in the Canadian diaspora.
The Divine Liturgy, the center and heart of the Church's life, must be understood and lived as an experience of communion with Christ, who continually renews and nourishes the soul.
The importance of catechesis and Christian education was likewise emphasized, particularly within today's multicultural and digital society. In an age in which faith is often reduced to a purely private matter, the Church is called to become a living place of encounter between the Gospel and everyday life. Several initiatives were presented, including online catechetical programs, theological courses, symposia, and conferences dedicated especially to youth and families.
Administrative Stewardship and Responsible Leadership
Alongside its spiritual dimension, the Congress also examined the administrative life of the Diocese. Recognizing the importance of transparency, accountability, and collaboration, participants discussed strategies for the effective stewardship of diocesan property, personnel, financial resources, and missionary and philanthropic initiatives.
The Congress reaffirmed its commitment to responsible governance and sincere cooperation among all diocesan institutions so that the Church may continue responding effectively to the needs of the faithful while strengthening its witness within Canadian society.
Social Ministry and Community Engagement
The Diocese's charitable, social, and cultural ministries also received considerable attention. During the past two years, numerous youth camps, pilgrimages, educational events, cultural programs, and humanitarian initiatives have been organized throughout the Diocese.
Participation in national celebrations, Christmas festivals, charitable events, and community gatherings has strengthened both the bonds among Romanian Orthodox faithful and the preservation of their spiritual and cultural identity within the Canadian multicultural landscape.
Educational initiatives and diocesan publications - including the diocesan magazine Cuvântul (The Word) - continue to promote Orthodox faith and Romanian cultural heritage throughout Canada.
The establishment of the Saint Maria Brâncoveanu Diocesan Association of Priests' Wives within the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Canada was also discussed. The Association will seek to foster fellowship and cooperation among the priests' wives throughout the Diocese, support catechetical, missionary, and charitable ministries carried out in the parishes, promote the values of the Christian family and the religious education of children and youth, provide moral and practical support to clergy families and to priests' wives facing difficult circumstances, encourage volunteer and charitable initiatives at the diocesan level and cultivate the example of faith, self-sacrifice, and devoted service inspired by the Association's protector, Saint Maria Brâncoveanu.
The Mission of a Living and Relevant Church
Throughout the Congress, the hierarchs reaffirmed the Church's mission to remain vibrant, dynamic, and responsive to the challenges of the modern world. They emphasized the importance of working together for the good of the community and of bearing witness to Christ through love, hope, and faith within Canadian society.
Participants were encouraged to preserve unity in faith and responsibility, to deepen communion within the Church, and to remain open to continual spiritual renewal and faithful witness to the Gospel.
The Divine Liturgy: The Spiritual Summit of the Congress
The spiritual culmination of the Congress was the celebration of the Divine Liturgy on Sunday morning. Hierarchs, clergy, monastics, and faithful gathered around the Holy Altar, manifesting the unity of the Church in Christ through common prayer and participation in the Holy Eucharist.
The Divine Liturgy provided an opportunity for all participants to offer thanksgiving to God for His abundant blessings and to receive the spiritual strength necessary to continue their ministry in the parishes, missions, and monasteries of the Diocese. The beauty of the liturgical worship, the sacred chant, and the Eucharistic communion reminded everyone that every initiative and every ministry of the Church finds both its source and its fulfillment in the celebration of the Divine Liturgy.
Following the Divine Liturgy, His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian expressed his gratitude to all participants and presented several diocesan distinctions. Mrs. Georgina Porozni received the Diploma of Merit and the Centennial Cross of the Diocese in recognition of her generous donation of land for youth ministry activities and her support for the historic Romanian settlement of Boian. Mrs. Nathalie Mickler was awarded the Diploma of Merit and the Centennial Insignia. Mrs. Jackie Toma received the Diploma of Merit and the Centennial Cross, while Mrs. Darline Iftody Shelemey received the Diploma of Merit and the Centennial Insignia for their dedicated work in the development of Holy Cross Cemetery in Hairy Hill, Alberta.
Hieromonk Polycarp Athenagoras was also awarded the Diploma of Merit and the Centennial Cross in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Diocese's social media and Communications Department.
Conclusion
The Sixth Congress of the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Canada stood as a powerful witness to pastoral responsibility, spiritual renewal, and ecclesial unity. In a rapidly changing society, the Romanian Orthodox communities of Canada continue to offer a living testimony of faith, dedication, and service, remaining steadfast in their commitment to Christ, His Gospel, and the people entrusted to their pastoral care.
