Patronal Feast Celebration at All Saints Parish in Toronto

On the first Sunday after Pentecost (Sunday of All Saints), All Saints Parish in Toronto joyfully celebrated its patronal feast, crowned by the pastoral visit and blessing of His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian, Romanian Orthodox Bishop of Canada.

The celebration began on Saturday evening with the Sacrament of Holy Unction (Holy Anointing), celebrated by clergy gathered under the leadership of His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian. Joining in prayer and service were Archpriest Viorel Țencaliuc, Hegumen Polycarp Athenagoras, Fr. Toderiță Călin, Fr. Marian Iacobuț, Fr. Lavrentie Gheorghe, and the parish priest, Fr. Emanuel-Ionuț Țencaliuc.

The joy of fellowship and communal prayer was brought to fulfillment on Sunday with the celebration of the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy by His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian, together with Fr. Emanuel Țencaliuc. Upon his arrival, the bishop was welcomed according to tradition with bread and salt. The festive atmosphere was enhanced by the solemn liturgical responses offered by the parish choir.

In the homily delivered at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian highlighted the significance of the Sunday of All Saints as the culmination of the Pentecostarion period and as a testimony to the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Church.

Drawing from the words of Saint Paul in the Epistle to the Hebrews, the bishop explained that the saints constitute the “great cloud of witnesses” that continually accompanies the life of the Church and reveals God’s work in the world. The hierarch emphasized that holiness is not reserved for a particular category of people but is the calling of all those who build their lives upon Christ: “The saints had different vocations, but the same root - Christ.”

Referring to the many known and unknown saints of the Church, the Romanian bishop underscored God’s constant care for every person, even when they remain unknown to the world: “Even if we are forgotten by people, we are never forgotten by God.”

Continuing his sermon, the hierarch stated that the life of holiness has its beginning, foundation, and fulfillment in the saving work of our Lord Jesus Christ: “Christ is both the foundation and the fulfillment of the life of holiness. Everything that takes place throughout a person’s life is the fruit of the work of God’s grace.”

Commenting on the Gospel reading of the day, His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian stressed the importance of confessing one’s faith. Such a confession cannot exist as a living and active reality unless faith first exists in the heart: “You cannot confess what does not first exist in your heart.”

Another important aspect of the homily was the connection between this present life and the life to come. The bishop reminded the faithful that the whole of human existence is oriented toward the Kingdom of God: “Human beings are created for eternal life,” and “in the Church we already experience a foretaste of eternal life.”

In the final part of his sermon, referring to the martyrs of the Church, the bishop explained that the power of their witness did not arise from human strength, but from the work of divine grace, which strengthened them amid trials and suffering: “Man brings his faith and his free will. God adds His grace. … The highest testimony of love for God is martyrdom.”

In conclusion, the Romanian bishop encouraged the faithful to look to the example of all the saints as an inexhaustible source of inspiration and spiritual strength, reminding them that the Sunday of All Saints is a celebration of the victory of God’s grace in human lives and of every Christian’s calling to holiness.

At the end of the service, Fr. Emanuel Țencaliuc expressed his gratitude to His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian for his presence, for the blessing he brought to the community, and for bringing relics of several Romanian saints for veneration. Thanks were also extended to all those in attendance, as well as to the representatives of the Consulate General of Romania in Toronto: Consul General Oana-Raluca Gherghe and Consul Florentin Titov Gherghe.

The event concluded with the traditional patronal feast fellowship meal, where the spirit of joy and communion continued, bearing witness to humanity’s enduring calling toward the Kingdom of God.
