Consecration of the New Altar of the Cathedral Holy Emperors Constantine and Helen and Saint Parascheva the Venerable
Edmonton (Alberta)

Between May 15–17, 2026, the Romanian Orthodox community in Edmonton experienced moments of profound spiritual celebration, occasioned by the feast of the Cathedral dedicated to the Holy Emperors Constantine and Helena and Saint Parascheva the Venerable of Iasi, an event crowned by the consecration of the new altar, pastoral activities, and an archpastoral visit to the Romanian community in Boian. During these days, His Eminence Metropolitan Iosif and His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian were present among the faithful, giving the event a special liturgical and missionary dimension.

Friday, May 15, 2026 – beginning of the spiritual program

The program began on Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. with the celebration of the Akathist Hymn to Saint Parascheva the Venerable and the placing of her vestment in its reliquary. The vestment of Saint Parascheva, brought from Iași with the blessing of His Eminence Teofan, Metropolitan of Moldavia and Bukovina, was delivered by Father Marian Timofte, administrative vicar of the Archdiocese of Iași. The moment gathered numerous faithful in prayer, expressing the community’s deep devotion to the spiritual protectress of Moldavia.

At 6:00 p.m., the Sacrament of Holy Unction was celebrated, a service of healing for soul and body, during which the hierarchs and attending priests offered prayers for the sick and for the entire community.

Saturday, May 16, 2026 – conferences and pastoral visit to Boian

The day began at 10:00 a.m. with three conferences delivered by Father Marian Timofte, Prof. Dr. Eduard Baidaus, and Fr. George Bâzgan as part of the pastoral and cultural program of the feast. The topics addressed included the personality of Metropolitan Veniamin Costachi, the geopolitical situation in the region of Bessarabia/Transnistria, and aspects of the life and thought of the Romanian cultural figure Lucian Blaga, offering the faithful opportunities for reflection and dialogue.

At 11:30 a.m., the archpastoral delegation departed for the Romanian community in Boian, at the Parish of the Dormition of the Mother of God. The faithful welcomed His Eminence Metropolitan Iosif and His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian with traditional Romanian hospitality. In the newly built church, a TeDeum of thanksgiving was celebrated, offering prayers for the blessing of the community, the preservation of the faith, and the unity of Romanians in the diaspora.

In the evening, at 6:00 p.m., Great Vespers was served in Edmonton, gathering numerous faithful in an atmosphere of prayer and spiritual preparation for the feast day.

Sunday, May 17, 2026 – feast day and consecration of the altar

Sunday marked the central day of the celebration. At 8:30 a.m., Matins was celebrated, preparing the faithful for the Divine Liturgy, followed by one of the most significant moments of the entire program: the consecration of the new cathedral altar.

At 9:30 a.m., the hierarchs performed the rite of consecration of the altar, a solemn moment in the life of a Church, accompanied by special prayers, the anointing of the Holy Altar with Holy and Great Chrism, and the placing of Holy Relics in the base of the Holy Table, according to Orthodox tradition. The faithful thus experienced a unique moment in the life of their community.

At 10:00 a.m., the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy was celebrated by His Eminence Metropolitan Iosif and His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian, together with Fr. George Bâzgan, administrative emeritus vicar, and a group of priests who attended the event. In his homily, Metropolitan Iosif emphasized the importance of unity, living faith, and the continuity of Orthodox tradition in the life of Romanian communities.

During the event, several distinctions were awarded. Fr. George Bâzgan received the Order Metropolitan Visarion Puiu with Cross from the Romanian Orthodox Metropolia of Western and Southern Europe. Donors and benefactors of the cathedral were awarded the Moldavian Cross of the Metropolia of Moldavia and Bukovina, as well as the Diploma of Merit and the Centennial Medal of the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Canada.

The celebration concluded at 12:30 p.m. with the official festive meal, a moment of communion and fraternal gathering between hierarchs, clergy, and faithful, marking the end of a celebration lived in a spirit of prayer, gratitude, and joy.

The entire event of May 15–17, 2026, stands as a living testimony to the continuity of Orthodox faith and the unity of Romanian communities both in the homeland and in the diaspora, bringing together prayer, tradition, and ecclesial communion in a landmark celebration of the spiritual life of the faithful.
