Day of Spiritual Retreat for the Ladies of AROLA – Canada
at the Monastery in Mono (March 21, 2026)
With God’s grace, on March 21, 2026, at the Romanian Orthodox Monastery “Holy Cross and St. Ephraim the New” in Mono, a blessed day of spiritual retreat for ladies took place, organized in the spirit of Great Lent under the theme “Following in the footsteps of the holy women.”
From the early hours of the morning, the participants gathered for Matins, followed by the Holy and Divine Liturgy, where, in a very special way, the ladies gave the responses at the chanter’s stand, creating a warm, humble, and prayerful atmosphere. Their united voices transformed the service into a living confession of faith and love for God.
A memorial service (parastas) was also served for the departed as well as for the ladies from AROLA who have fallen asleep in the Lord—an occasion of remembrance, gratitude, and prayer for their souls.
A moment of deep spiritual experience was the Jesus Prayer, recited by each participant 40 times, in a blessed silence in which hearts were gathered in the calling of the Lord’s Name: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” This simple yet profound practice brought peace and spiritual strengthening.
The day continued with a rich and balanced program of prayer, fellowship, and practical activity. The participants took part in a monastic culinary workshop, preparing Lenten dishes together in a spirit of obedience and joy. The atmosphere in the kitchen was familial, where every gesture became a small act of service.
After the common meal, there followed a time of spiritual discussions on the theme of the courage of the faithful woman in an increasingly challenging world, presented by His Grace Nichifor Botoșăneanul auxiliary-bishop via online connection, as part of an event organized by the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese of the United States of America (mitropolia.us). The questions, testimonies, and reflections revealed a sincere desire to live the faith not only in words, but in everyday life.
Another beautiful moment was the walk in nature, following in the footsteps of Romanian spiritual fathers—St. Cleopa, St. Paisie of Neamț, St. Theodora of Sihla, and St. Daniil the Hesychast—amid the quiet of the forest and the lingering snow. The cross standing in the midst of nature became a place of pause, prayer, and remembrance of Christ’s sacrifice.
The day concluded with the blessing received from Fr. Polycarp, hegumen of the Monastery, crowning a day filled with grace and communion.
This gathering was more than an event—it was an experience of communion, strengthening, and spiritual renewal, in which each participant departed with a lighter heart and a greater longing for God.
Glory to God for all things!
May the Mother of God protect all the ladies who participated and those who wish to come in the future!
