Opening of the Church Music and Choir Service Course

“The Chant That Brings Rest to the Soul”

On Wednesday, March 4, 2026, the first session of the church music and choir service course “The Song That Restores the Soul” took place. The course is organized by the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Canada, through the Cultural-Theological and Catechetical Training Centre “Saint Maximus the Confessor.” The event was held online via Zoom and brought together over 70 participants eager to deepen their understanding of church singing and the importance of serving at the choir stand.

His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian of Canada opened the session with a few words on the significance of church music and serving at the choir stand. Fr. Dragoș Giulea, director of the Saint Maximus the Confessor Center, welcomed the initiative and highlighted the role of the course’s coordinating group.

Mrs. Mădălina Enache presented the members of the initiative and support team for the course. The opening session focused on presenting the course objectives, program structure, and methods of study. It was emphasized that the choir stand is not merely a place for singing, but a space of witness, prayer, and liturgical responsibility. Church singing supports the prayer of the priest and the community, and the proper order of services depends greatly on the preparation and dedication of those serving at the choir stand.

The course, which will run over 12 months, is organized into eight thematic modules covering both theoretical and practical aspects: from the spiritual meaning of church singing and the responsibility of serving at the choir stand, to vocal techniques, liturgical typikon, ecphonetic reading, basics of psaltic music, and the essential liturgical repertoire for regular service. The activities include online lessons and listening exercises, as well as practical workshops in church, considered central for forming choir chanters and readers.

During the session, the organizers emphasized the importance of active participation in services, practicing singing directly from the liturgical text, and working in harmony with the presiding priest. They also presented methods for personalized feedback, designed to support each participant in developing vocal technique and the ability to sing with clarity, simplicity, and measure.

Through this initiative, the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Canada aims to form chanters and readers who will serve responsibly at the choir stand, contributing to the beauty and proper order of services, and providing spiritual rest to both the priest and the faithful. The course also represents an opportunity for communion and spiritual growth, where theoretical knowledge is combined with liturgical practice, allowing participants to understand more deeply the service at the choir stand as an essential part of church life.

The first session thus marked the beginning of a valuable formative journey, designed to strengthen the liturgical life of the parishes within the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Canada and beyond, and to provide the faithful with an experience of choir service that is authentic, beautiful, and responsible.

A special module will be available for English speaking participants.
