His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian – observer at CCCB Plenary Assembly 2025

Montreal, Sept. 22–23, 2025

His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian participated on Monday and Tuesday, September 22–23, 2025, in the Plenary Assembly of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), held in Montreal.

He attended as an observer, representing the Canadian Conference of Orthodox Bishops (CCOB), contributing to the spirit of dialogue, unity, and shared witness among Christian communities in Canada.

Catholic Bishops from across Canada gathered in Montreal this week for the annual Plenary Assembly of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB). It was a time of prayer, reflection, and deep discussion on how the Church can respond to the challenges facing our world today.

Among the many themes, the bishops marked the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, reflecting on the unity of faith and the call to be light in a darkening world. A heartfelt message was sent to the newly elected Pope Leo XIV, expressing both joy and solidarity in these historic times.

One of the most urgent topics was the growing impact of Artificial Intelligence. Experts and Church leaders raised serious concerns about how AI may affect truth, human dignity, and our relationships — calling for ethical use that puts people first.

The bishops also heard sobering updates from Development and Peace – Caritas Canada, including the devastating cuts to international aid that are threatening support for millions in places like Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, and the Sahel. In response, a new campaign, “Transforming Debt into Hope”, was launched to advocate for justice and global solidarity.

The Church’s mission of unity was also front and center, with renewed efforts in ecumenical and interfaith dialogue — reaching out to Orthodox, Evangelicals, Coptic Christians, Anglican and other religious traditions leaders to walk together in witness and action.

There were encouraging stories too: affordable housing initiatives supported by the St. Vincent de Paul Society, expanded outreach through Salt + Light Media, a strong reminder of the Church’s call to bring hope, speak with clarity, and never abandon those on the margins.

As wars continue and social tensions rise, the bishops reminded to all that peace is built in hearts — and the Church must remain a voice of mercy, justice, and communion.
