The fourth edition of the "Saint George the Great Martyr" chess tournament at the Episcopal Cathedral of Saint-Hubert
With the blessing of His Grace Ioan Casian, at the Episcopal Cathedral "Saint George the Great Martyr and Saints Epictetus and Astion" in Saint-Hubert, QC, on Sunday, May 26, 2024, the fourth edition of the "Saint Great Martyr George" chess tournament took place. The event, organized by the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of Canada and coordinated by Mr. Cezar Vitencu, has become a true tradition for Romanians in these lands.
Around 40 young people between the ages of 6 and 20 participated, who were divided into several groups. Among the partners were the Romanian-Canadian Zigzag newspaper and Junimea School in Montreal. The ladies of the Episcopal Cathedral ladies' association provided refreshments to the participants. At the end, the most deserving participants received diplomas, medals and trophies. Also, young people from the ROYA youth association of the parish prepared icons with the patron saints of the Diocese for each participant.
"It is a great joy that this tournament has already reached its fourth edition. We thank the Most Reverend Father Ioan Casian for the support and parental love he gave us from the beginning, and Father Maxim for his encouragement and help, but also to all the good people who lent their hand to contribute to the success of this event. Beyond the actual competition, this tournament is an opportunity for young people to get to know each other and make friends", said Mr. Cezar Vitencu, the main organizer of the event.
Young people from Montreal, Rive Sud, Montremblant, Saint Jerome and other towns in the province of Quebec participated in the tournament. The surprise element this year was that the young participants were able to bring a local friend with them to participate in the event. Praise God for everything!
